Why this LGBTQI+ Wedding Shows St Elizabeth’s House is the Hidden Gem of Plympton Wedding Venues

On the edge of Plymouth in South Devon, there sits a beautiful historic building in the ancient stannary town of Plympton St Maurice. This 17th Century Georgian manner was recently the centre of a fantastic wedding joining Ireland & Plymouth by the marriage of Ben & Malachy.

Fortunately they had Maven Visuals Wedding Films along to document it all in a wedding film, so we could share the best wedding moments with you.

Here are our 5 favourite moments from their wedding film.

Moment 1/5: When there were Dogs

And good dogs they were too. If you’re a dog owner getting married, it’s probably important that your venue is dog friendly. At St Elizabeth’s House, the Dogs had TONNES of space to run & play in the wonderfully landscaped garden. They sat and watched the outdoor wedding ceremony, and even starred in a few wedding photos.

At first, these doggos seemed mistrustful of me, on account of my wedding videography camera, but by the end of the day… It feels like we became pals.

Moment 2/5: When they let us sneak off to fire smoke bombs (BEFORE the ceremony!)

What’s the best thing about two grooms in suits? You don’t have to worry about a white wedding dress getting stained with paint.

Initially when the wedding photographer and I were told of the plan to sneak up to nearby Plympton Castle to set off colourful wedding-themed smoke grenades… we naturally looked at the clock and panicked when we saw we only had around 20 minutes before the ceremony was due to start.

Whats the second best thing about two grooms in suits? If neither of them are at the ceremony on time… then nobody panics. So off we went.

Though smoke grenades for weddings often turn out to be chaotic… on this occasion it went swimmingly, with a smokescreen of beautiful pastel colours filling the sky.

Moment 3/5: When they had the perfect Plymouth theme

When you consider Devon as a whole, I’m a Plymouth-based wedding videographer.

However, I actually live in Tavistock, about 20 minutes away. So it’s only in the context of the South-west & broader UK that I consider myself ‘from Plymouth’.

That said, when I saw my favourite plymouth locations from my childhood on the tables I felt a daft kind of regional pride. Having often filmed weddings as far as the other side of the country (even Truro once, you) it was nice to know I was well and truly in my home.

The wedding tables were named after famous Plymouth spots like Royal William Yard, Saltram House, Devils Peak and yes… even Plymouth Hoe (the guests were asked not to think too hard about why they had been put on that table…)

Moment 4/5: When the Grooms showed off their underwear

Admittedly, a sentence I didn’t ever think I’d write.

The big twist of the day was that this entire time they had been wearing each other on their backside since the start. Outrageous.

You can see the bridesmaids reaction below… It was a lot of fun and a great wedding moment.

Both grooms showing off their "just married" novelty underwear as the bridesmaids all surround them gasping in shock

Moment 5/5: When Ireland & Plymouth came together.

Ultimately, during the first dance, I realised how much joy there is in seeing two completely different cultures come together and make a party of it.

I know we’re all close neighbours… but I don’t think you’d find much argument that the Irish and the Plymouthians have their separate cultures. Seeing both come together and show each other the best parts of their respective cultures just completed the day perfectly.

I also liked that St Elizabeths House had some grand 17th Century stairs for me to stand on, so that when the dancing really took off I could be well out of the way and capture it discreetly without receiving a stray Irish Ceili to the face.

So, feel free to jump in the conversation!

Which one of these moments were your favourite? Have any made you want to plan your wedding differently?
